Why So Many Calgary Homes Still Have Knockdown Ceilings

Knockdown ceilings were popular in Calgary homes throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. Builders used them because they were fast to apply, affordable, and good at hiding drywall imperfections.

In 2026, however, many homeowners are choosing to move away from knockdown textures. The reasons are simple: darker rooms, dust collection, limited lighting options, and a dated appearance that doesn’t match modern interiors.

f you’re considering flattening or upgrading your knockdown ceiling, there is now a cleaner, faster alternative than scraping, sanding, or drywall repair. Our knockdown ceiling replacement solutions in Calgary allow homeowners to upgrade their ceilings without dust, demolition, or long renovation timelines.

Knockdown Ceiling vs Modern Stretch Ceiling

How Much Does It Cost to Flatten a Knockdown Ceiling in Calgary?

Flattening a knockdown ceiling in Calgary typically costs $9–15 per square foot, depending on ceiling condition, height, and required prep and building it self.

For most homes, this means several days of scraping, mudding, sanding, priming, and repainting—along with dust, disruption, and cleanup.

If asbestos testing is required or lighting upgrades are added, costs and timelines increase quickly.
This is why many Calgary homeowners are choosing stretch ceilings instead. So how much stretch ceiling cost?

Stretch Ceilings: Calgary’s Mess-Free Ceiling Upgrade

A stretch ceiling installs just ¾ inch below your existing surface—without scraping or demolition.
In most Calgary homes, we can complete a full main floor in just 3–4 days, and you never need to leave the house during installation.

No Dust, No Disruption

Because we don’t sand or paint, your furniture and floors stay clean.
The material is anti-static, meaning it doesn’t collect dust even years later.

Seamless Lighting Integration

We can build your stretch ceiling with any lighting option you want—from pot lights and LED perimeter strips to floating panels and glowing star effects.
It’s the most flexible ceiling system in Calgary.

More Finishes Than You Can Imagine

Choose from:

• Flat matte or satin for a clean architectural look
• High-gloss reflective finishes that visually expand space
• Custom printed designs or glowing star ceilings for entertainment rooms
• Acoustic or antibacterial materials for healthier, quieter spaces

Each surface comes with a long-term warranty, and the finish will never yellow, stain, or discolor over time.

Why Stretch Ceilings Outperform Knockdown Ceilings

Stretch ceilings offer Calgary homeowners a modern, European-style solution that’s faster, cleaner, and far more elegant than drywall or texture.

Space Ceiling did an amazing job! It looks awesome, my wife loves it too and Aivaras was very clear and efficient. I think the price was also fair compared to other stretch ceiling providers. I can't tell you how glad I am not having to see or repaint those popcorn ceilings ever again

We had Space Ceiling install stretch ceilings in our basement (den and bedroom). We couldn't be happier! It transformed our dark basement with popcorn ceilings into a bright and clean modern space to enjoy. All our family wanted to come by to see what a stretch ceiling was and loved it! We even had neighbours come knocking on our door because they had seen the 'Space Ceiling' logo on vehicles in my driveway. They also loved it which led to more neighbours coming to look.

All the staff and workers involved were very friendly and kept us informed as to what they were doing as the job progressed. We will definitely give Space Ceiling a call to help on our next renovation!
